A man who robbed a convenience store in the Abbeyhill area earlier this year has been jailed.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday (Thursday) Thomas McKenzie was handed a six-year sentence for the incident which took place at the RF Newsagents in Spring Gardens on 14th April.

McKenzie (29) entered the shop and threatened the shopkeeper with a knife before making off with £100 in cash.

He was detained a short time later and subsequently charged.

Detective Sergeant Paul Greig said: “Tackling acquisitive crime in all its forms remains one of Edinburgh’s top priorities and whenever these incidents occur we will conduct a full and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

“McKenzie’s sentence reflects the commitment both Police Scotland and the Crown Office share in removing offenders from our communities.

“The outcome of this trial should serve as a reminder to others that a prison sentence awaits for being involved in crimes of this nature.”
